A penny to the head, a fist to the face, scanning for horns… when did it first happen to you?

A call from a British Rabbi for Jewish Twitter users to share their #FirstAntisemiticExperience has yielded a surge of painful memories on the social media site.

Rabbi Zvi Solomons serves the Jewish Community of Berkshire, an Orthodox community in the English town of Reading, barely half an hour train ride west of London. Responding to an historic high of anti-Semitic incidents in the UK — as well as to the very public accusations of anti-Semitism in the British Labour party, particularly from leader Jeremy Corbyn — Solomons asked Jews to share their earliest memories of enduring slurs and violence.

The hashtag has succeeded in demonstrating that the problem of anti-Semitism is “universal,” says Rabbi Solomons, noting that examples range from outright violence to subtle prejudice.

The answers are both painfully varied and painfully overlapping: many report experiencing violence, discrimination from teachers, slurs from childhood friends, Holocaust denial, approval of the Holocaust and taunts by Evangelical Christians. Of the growing hundreds of responses, the preponderance are from British Jews (helped by the fact that Solomon is British, working at a British congregation) with American, Canadian, and other European Jews chiming in. A surprising number mention violence. Many come from younger Jews…

My first antisemitic experience was during kindergarten (age four or five) and being asked on the playground why I or “my family” killed Jesus. I didn’t even know who Jesus was.

Hey everyone? Please don’t do this. I get that you mean well, but… We all know Jesus was Jewish. Christians white, non-white, American, and non-American also know Jesus was Jewish. That has never mattered to any Christian. Of course it’s illogical; it’s prejudice and hatred.

We also know that theologically and historically, Jesus has both been de-Judaified by all forms of Christianity and Jesus’s death has been blamed on the Jews. It’s literally in the Christian Bible (Matthew 27:24-25, John 19:16). Saying that Jesus was Jewish and therefore Christians shouldn’t hate Jews ignores about 2000 years of institutionalized antisemitism from Christians and Christian communities. It’s only relatively recently that Catholicism (Vatican II in 1960) and some forms of Protestantism (e.g., the mainline Protestant Lutheran Church in 1998) have dealt with and apologized for their institutionalized charge of deicide and Christian antisemitism.

There are still Christian denominations that teach Jewish deicide while still explicitly stating Jesus was Jewish. because his Jewishness isn’t related to us being a cursed people who refused to see the “truth” of Jesus’s divinity. And as Ephraim the Syrian (amongst others) taught, Satan continues to dwell amongst us while we’re forced to eternally wander the world in exile as punishment for being Christ Killers. Because it’s all there in Christian scripture. This is a Christian thing; not a white American Christian thing.

Also, the reason you shouldn’t hate Jewish people is that we are fucking human people and deserve basic dignity, respect, and safety.

Emma Stone screaming “I’m sorry” during Sandra Oh’s monologue shows that at any given moment, without a hint of irony, White women will insert themselves into a woman of color’s spotlight. She HAD to say something, despite the years and years of silence on the issue, right then and there as a half laugh for…what? To turn the real issue of white washing into a joke? To reinsert herself into the conversation when her decisions hurt Asian actors like Sandra? It’s all liberal posturing disgusing white fragility because she most definitely felt embarrassed to be indirectly called out for her complicity in white washing.

Why else yell an apology after four years of her just never really addressing it? It’s white guilt taken to a literal extreme to pander to the audience for cheap woke laughs. “Look at her, she’s aware of the issues! And she’s sorry!!! XD total self own!” White women can’t bare to sit in their uncomfortability when they are confronted with their complicity and try to detract from it in any way possible. Sure, it’s just a throw away comment but really think about the ideology that fueled her need to say that in the first place, at the time she said it, and the reaction of her saying it from a most white crowd. By dismissing the comment as a jokey, self depreciating nod, we dismiss how white people can constantly do some self flaggration, usually publically, years after the damage has already been done. We see it over and over again.

Yes I know Sandra and Andy’s joint monologue was to supposed to be light hearted and fun, poking satirical fun at topics etc etc but it’s something to chew on. The whole interaction was brief (Emma’s comment wasn’t planned and she literally injected it into the monologue) but is pretty illuminating.

“so i return to my body.. from the other plane of existence.. in which i scream”

DEAD

localgays

“Story time.

I have this one white friend.

And - [mocking] I have this one white friend, I’m not racist. And like - where was I even going with this? [laughs] She’s not even my friend, she’s just someone I know. Okay, whatever, ‘kay, so this one white person that I know - [under breath] (I know a lot, my entire town is white.) Anyway, um, one day, she comes up to me, and she’s like,

Jenny, what are you?” and, you know, that’s like white person talk for like, [sarcastic mocking] “what FUCKING country do you come from? Like obviously you’re not from here.”  And I’m like, “um, I’m Chinese.”

And she’s like “What? You’re Chinese?”

And I’m like, “Yeah, I don’t know why that’s so much of a surprise.”

And she’s like “Well, I thought you said you were Asian.”

And - [deep breath] [pause] there was a moment, a good minute and a half, where I left my body and ascended onto another plane, and I screamed into the abyss of that plane [pause] because she did not know that Asian and Chinese are… I, I can’t, I can’t, I can’t even… you know, whatever.

So, return to my body, from the [pause] other plane of existence in which I scream. A lot. And I tell her: “You know, China, China, you see, the country that I’m from, is a part of Asia.”

And she’s like, “Where’s Asia?”

[whispers] She asked me. Where Asia is.

And I say, “Well, Asia consists of, you know..” and I list the different Asian countries and she’s like “Whaat?”

And I’m like [sarcastically] it’s, it’s this thing, you know, that you learn about in like third grade geography. It’s a continent! And she’s like “A continent?”

And I’m like “Yes.”

And she goes, “so it’s not a country?”

I’m like, “No.”

And she’s like “What’s the difference?”

And I’m like [deep breath] “America, you see, has like North, Central, South, so like, take somewhere from Canada; they are North American but they’re also Canadian…”

And she’s like “I don’t understand.”

And I’m like “It’s okay, just know that I am both Asian AND Chinese” and you know what, she is still confused to this day, and I [pause] am still on the other plane of existence, screaming, as I tell this story to you. So you can come join me, on the separate plane of existence.”

you know when you’re born in a non-english speaking country bilingualism is kind of a default. we are taught english from a young age so when someone asks me what languages do i speak, i respond with “well croatian and english obv, but im studying french and russian too”. and that bothers me. because english is fucking hard. in my country bilingualism is default, trilingualism is expected, and people get impressed when you speak five fucking languages where as native english speakers are praised for learning one (1) foreign language. i get that english is a major global language and why it is taught, but it bothers me that even if i spoke 5 languages fluently it would be useless if i didnt speak perfect english. and along with that, all of my hard work that i put into my english is dismissed because english is expected of me.
rant over.
